“In Darkness Waiting” was a seminal story in the Alliance Universe, and in my career. I’d found that my stories were getting longer and longer, and I wanted to write a novel set in that universe. So I plotted one using the Hoorka assassins, and started working on it. But somewhere in the writing, I became rather wary of the amount of work I was going to have to do and the enormous pile of paper that was beginning to accumulate.

So I abandoned the story as a novel and took out the subplots and several of the minor characters and scenes, the love affair between the Thane and Mondom, and ‘refitted’ the story as a novelette. I sent it in to Asimov’s SF Magazine, which had just started publication, and Gardner Dozois, who was working there as Assistant Editor at the time, read it and gave me some copious revision notes. I revised the story accordingly, sent it back, and they accepted it.

A few years later, I would go back to the notes on the novel version of the story and actually write the novel… and its sequel, and the sequel to that. These would become my first three novels, published by Bantam Books: SLOW FALL TO DAWN, DANCE OF THE HAG, and A QUIET OF STONE.

They all had their birth in this story…
